Slot Car Racing Can Be a Great Hobby For You

The hobby of slot car racing is enjoyed by both adults and children. While it is technically a hobby, RC car racing is considered by some to be a sport. The cars used in a slot car race are typically just miniature versions of the real-life stock cars.

Similar to a "Hot Wheels" automobile, these cars have an electric motor in them and they run on a slot car race track. While many people enjoy this hobby just as a fun past-time, others take it very seriously and will go to great lengths to fabricate their own cars or modify a commercially built one so that it will perform optimally.

The slot car racing world is made up of a variety of different racing enthusiasts. Some, like little boys, choose to just race commercially built slot cars in the basement or a garage somewhere. Others will go to any extreme to participate in highly publicized races that require specially built or modified cars that perform at high levels not normally seen in hobby RC car racing.

Most of these slot car race competitions pay good money to the winner. Those who are not really interested in competitively racing slot cars may choose to simply collect the cars and will work on creating a custom automobile racing slot track, similar to the ones produced by model train aficionado's.

What is the Formula 1 Car Racing?

F1 car racing is another name for the Formula 1 car racing circuit. Some people mistake it for Indy one because of the similarity in the looks of the cars. However, this is a different class of sport and the regulations and rules are quite different. The highest class available in open-wheel racing is Formula 1.

This designation was made by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, or FIA. The FIA is the governing body over all types of car racing sports internationally. The term "formula" relates to the qualifications that the FIA has for a driver and an automobile to be allowed to participate in this circuit. There are many rules and regulations.

The Formula One circuit is made up of street car racing, which is referred to as the Grand Prix. One thing that is distinctly different about the Formula 1 racing circuit is that there are two championships at the end of the circuit: one for the automobile constructors and one for the drivers.

A race of this type is generally held on a specially built car race track or on a roadway. The road races are perhaps the most popular of the Formula 1 races; the most widely known being the Monaco Grand Prix.

Finding Warmth in the Bin and the Branches

Getting lost in a closed Swiss national park without food, water, proper clothing or a cellphone is an expensive way to get some perspective on life.

It's impossible to think you are someone special when you live in the Swiss Alps. Up above the cloud line, surrounded by huge jagged peaks that seem to move with the seasons, you are no one. The Alps don't care about your family or your job. They don't care if you are rich or thin or unhappy. These mountains have been around a lot longer than you have and they will still be standing here long after you and everyone else you know are long gone. That is just the way it is. Humility is one trait you acquire quickly in the Alps.

Several years ago I left Canada to move to Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. I wanted a change, and the Alps were as far as I could get from downtown Montreal while still being able to watch my soaps en français. I sent a few emails to some businesses in the area, and soon enough I received a job offer to help produce promotional materials for a boarding school; I also became a European correspondent for some North American magazines. With that, I packed six duffel bags and moved to the small alpine town of Villars, a place where if you walk more than one kilometre, you have to head either very up or very down, depending on the route you choose.

Newfoundland Travel - Avalon Peninsula

Our destination today was Terra Nova National Park, on the East Coast of Newfoundland. We were very surprised at the fees they charged: $5.00 per day per adult for use plus $21.00 per day for camping with no amenities (electricity was $5.00 extra per night). The area boasts arboreal forests reaching to the sea. There are many hiking trails, most between four and ten kilometers in length.

We went to the marine interpretation center. A ranger explains the different aquatic animals they have in their touch tank: stars, scallops, various crabs, barnacles, etc. It was very informative. They also have tanks with local fish in them: cod, caplain, etc.

Motorsport in the England's East Midlands

In the UK, motorsport engineering and services has a total turnover in excess of £5 billion, of which 50% is exported. The industry employs 38,000 people, with 75% of this workforce being highly qualified engineers working in 3,000 individual, mostly small and medium sized enterprises. The motorsport sector and its supply chain drives the development and growth of companies which make up the cluster of 450 high-performance engineering (HPE) companies in the East Midlands, including 200 motorsport-specific companies.

The cluster consists of engine builders, precision engineers and electronics specialists. But there is also a huge skills overlap which takes the business activity of HPE companies into the field of servicing for the automotive, aerospace, electronics, material technology, watersports and medical technologies sectors.

Motorsport Industry

UK teams, engineering firms and supporting services have been a major global force in motorsport for many years now. In the UK, motorsport manufacturing is concentrated in a cluster that includes the East Midlands, Northamptonshire in particular. Here, we boast major venues for racing and testing vehicles:

Silverstone, the internationally renowned, world-class venue for motorsport events home of the British F1 Grand Prix and British Motorcycle Grand Prix
Rockingham, the only 'oval' motorsport circuit in the UK
Santa Pod, the UK's premier drag racing strip
MIRA, renowned as a leading design, testing and certification organisation that provides engineering expertise and advanced testing facilities across the entire range of transport technologies
